The Location of Orchard Farm
Orchard Farm is located on the northern edge of Combles village on the
Somme, just off of the D.20 which leads to Guillemont and Longueval to the
north and Peronne and the A1 Autoroute to the south.
Directions to Orchard Farm from the A1 Autoroute
Combles is situated roughly mid-way between Albert and Peronne. It is easily
reached by taking the A1 Autoroute, Junction 13.1 signposted Peronne and
Albert. Having exited through the péage, you will approach a large
roundabout, take the first exit, signposted to Albert. This road crosses
over the Autoroute and the TGV train line. A few hundred yards further on
you will see a crossroads junction; take the turn to your right signposted
as the D.146 to Combles and Maurepas. You will travel along a winding
tree-lined road that opens out into sweeping farmland and on to Maurepas. In
the centre of this village, the road takes a sharp right turn, opposite the
village green. Continue to Combles.
As you enter Combles, take a left hand turn down a small hill (there is a
signpost on the house opposite you indicating La Poste and the Garage) and
you will see a small café and the small garage on your left at the bottom of
the hill where you must give way! Travel straight on up the next hill and
you will see the magnificent Mairie ahead of you. There is a pharmacy on
your right and the Proxi store and Post Office (La Poste) on your left.
Continue passed a signpost on your right indicating Morval (D74). Continue
up the hill through a left hand and then right hand bend and switch on your
right hand indicator. You will see a small lane to your right with a green
road sign for “R. Gaston Caron”. Turn in here and approximately 30 yards on
your left is the barn entrance to Orchard Farm. Please drive through and
into the courtyard.
Directions to Orchard Farm from Longueval via Guillemont
Take the D.20 from the centre of Longueval (by the Calypso Café). A few
hundred yards along this road, you will see the signs for the South African
Memorial and Longueval Cemetery off to your left. Continue towards
Guillemont and as you enter the centre of this village, you will see Combles
indicated left at a small crossroads. If you pass the church on the
right-hand side, you have gone too far! Follow this road which eventually
goes between Leuze and Bouleaux Woods and passes a huge green and white
water tower. As you enter the village, switch on your left indicator and
take the first turning, which is Rue Gaston Caron. This turning is opposite
Rue Neuve, indicated to M.A.R.P.A and the Gendarmerie.
